  Jehovah's Witnesses - Do they really...

  I think things have changed over the years. My grandfather knew his bible really well. He very rarely used any JW literature. Did he know God? I can't answer that - certainly the things he did in his life would tell me otherwise, but I'm sure he thought he did and was justified his child abuse, drinking etc. Now I don't think the average JW really knows God or their bible. They know the scriptures the "society" tells them to memorize for FS, and they know what the "society" wants them to know about God. For all the so called "bible study" they do they really know very little. I'm speaking of personal experience - I thought I knew so much when I was a JW, but was shocked when I look back on how little I really knew/know. I look to other family members - they can't just look something up in the bible to expain anything - it's the publications first and foremost. BB

  Still no Memorial invite - now I have a dilemma

  i have never yet missed the memorial.

  i've been considered "inactive" for years, and so has my husband.

  about the only thing we attend is the memorial (and that's because of family).

  OK, I typed out a response and it didn't post!!?? There are strange things happening here (at home) tonite!!

  Suffice to say - I'm going to leave it up to hubby. He should know that the date is soon - he knows when Easter is because he has time off work, and memorial is always just before. He's never taken the lead spiritually - and if he wants to go to memorial he can make the arrangements!

  I'm going to mention the seminar and see if he wants to go. Maybe when he checks his calendar something will jog his memory.

  I have never yet missed the Memorial. I've been considered "inactive" for years, and so has my husband. About the only thing we attend is the memorial (and that's because of family). We usually get a visit from a local elder inviting us to the memorial and letting us know time/place etc., and usually my mom asks if we are going to hers (another town). Well neither has mentioned anything. My husband hasn't said anything, I don't even think he knows when the date is.

  I don't want to go, but I know he will (even though he hasn't been to a meeting or assembly in years, he still considers himself a JW and goes to the memorial).

  So here's the dilemma - do I just not say anything to him about the date? There is a seminar I really want to attend (I'm pretty sure it's something he'd be interested in too) on Wednesday night, plus I usually work till 7 on Wednesdays (but that is easily enough changed, my schedule is pretty flexible and I can pretty much set my hours).

  I'm just worried how he'll feel if he finds out afterwards that I knew when it was and I didn't tell him - I know he'd want to go and there is no way he can go on his own without causing major family problems.

  Any suggestions?

  The death of the Watchtower pre-study

  who is old enough to remember when witnesses used eagerly to meet on a friday or saturday night to "pre-study" the watchtower in groups: reading paragraphs, underlining, reading scriptures (sometimes)?.

  what happened to that, does anyone still do it anywhere?

  i think witnesses are just not as enthusiastic about the "truth" as they used to be.

  I remember in the early '80's when the new Canadian Bethel was being built, we had alot of the workers assigned to our hall. Several of the brothers got together and organized on Sunday evening a WT study for all the young people in the hall (maybe 18 and under). We had it at various houses and sometimes at the brothers that lived off site in rented houses. They made it fun - we'd always have goodies afterwards and just hang out. I don't remember if they were told to stop - or the building projects finished up and they moved on.

  once in a while, not often, i might fell like saying a few words to god in prayer, but i don't do it, knowing that it's a waste of time, because it won't make a difference..

  I pray from time to time. There was a long time I didn't pray at all, I just couldn't bring myself to. I have experienced answers to my prayers, but the warning is true, be careful what you ask for.

  On a lighter note - I pray every time I "RRROLL UP THE RIM". No answers to that prayer yet!

  as a jw i was in a cong where there was a deaf group.

  when the interpreters moved away they asked the cong if there was anyone who wanted to learn.

  I'm not a saint. not by a long shot. But my heart has always gone out to those who need it. Having gone through so much in my own life, I always reached out to those who needed just that wee bit more than others. And no one, not an elder, or a husband or a religion will ever tell me compassion, love, and helping others is wrong or bad or less important than meetings and field service.

  What a great friend you were! That is what friendship is all about. You sound like such a loving and loyal person. Anybody would be honoured to call you a friend. Shame on your husband and that elder!!!!

  I too loved to be able to sit and watch the sign intrepeters. It was facinating. Did you ever intpret at Copps in Hamilton - that's where I would try and get a seat with a good view. My husband learned ASL a long time ago - he still remembers abit.

  Yep - it was a gift bag with tissue etc. I was surprised - I mean it wasn't my birthday or anything ;-). I don't know why she packaged it up that way - she's given me mags and things before. It was kind of weird.

  Unfortunatly Blondie, at this time I don't think those books would do her anygood. We are kind of in a truce right now - she doesn't ask and I don't tell why I'm no longer going to meetings. Last time I mentioned something it was pretty ugly.
